Administrative history
The Young People's Union (Y.P.U.) of the United Church and its Conference-level units were organized around 1935, following the recommendation of the Interprovincial Young People's Council (1934). Saskatchewan Conference's Y.P.U. appears to have been formed sometime after the first National Y.P.U. Council, in mid-1935.
In 1965, the United Church Y.P.U. and its constituent Conference- and Presbytery-level groups appear to have been reorganized to form units of Kairos.
Custodial history
Records in the fonds were likely transferred to the archives between 1935 and 1986. Their original provenance is unclear.
From 1925 through to 1982, the official repository for Conference, Presbytery and local records of the United Church in Saskatchewan was at St. Andrew’s College (Saskatoon). In 1982, the Conference signed an agreement to house their records with the Saskatchewan Archives Board (later Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan), while still retaining ownership and management responsibilities. The collections were gradually relocated and continue to be stored with the Provincial Archives, to the present day.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of records created and/or collected by the Saskatchewan Branch of the Young People's Union (Y.P.U.), its members, treasurers, and committee(s).
Contents include: meeting minutes from the Y.P.U. executive and committees; correspondence from the Y.P.U. President; correspondence with and material relating to the national-level Y.P.U.; financial records; convention reports; lists of executive members; files relating to various Y.P.U. activities, including youth caravans; various newsletters and related items collected from other Y.P.U. groups, outside of Saskatchewan; and a collection of Youth Christian Education Leaders Resource materials, including Explorers and Hi-C groups. There are also minutes and reports from Presbyterial-level Y.P.U. units, in Kamsack, Qu'Appelle, Regina and Saskatoon.
