Bio/Historical Note: Jack Sures was born in 1934 in Brandon, Manitoba. He earned an MA in painting and printmaking from Michigan State University in 1959. After two years working in the United Kingdom and traveling in Europe and the Middle East he established a studio in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was instrumental in establishing the ceramics department at the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus (now the University of Regina). Sures was Chairman of the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Regina from 1969-71. He undertook an appointment in 1973-1974 working in Grenada, West Indies for the United Nations Handcraft Development Program. Sures had a distinguished career, both in teaching and art-making, amassing many honours, including the Saskatchewan Order of Merit (2003), Member of the Order of Canada (1991), Saskatchewan Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement (2017).and the Governor General’s Award for excellence in fine craft sponsored by the Saidye Bronfman Foundation (2018). He was named Professor Emeritus in 1998 and was a visiting artist at the University of Regina until two months before his death in 2018.
