Histoire administrative
The United Church of Canada was formed in 1925, from a union of the Congregational Union of Canada, the Methodist Church and 70% of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, along with a number of churches organized under the General Council of Local Union Churches (mostly in Western Canada). Saskatchewan Conference was one of eleven regional Conferences established by the United Church of Canada General Council, at their inaugural meeting, in June 1925. Initially, the Conference contained 16 presbyteries but this number varied, in the years that followed.
In January 2019, as part of a larger restructuring of the United Church of Canada, Saskatchewan Conference and its seven existing presbyteries were combined into a single entity, initially identified as Region 4 and later renamed Living Skies Regional Council.
Historique de la conservation
The provenance of this series is not clear but the records were likely received sometime between 1925 and 1986, while the Conference Archives was located at St. Andrew’s College, in Saskatoon. In 1982, Saskatchewan Conference signed an agreement to house their records with the Saskatchewan Archives Board (now the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan) and the collection was relocated to the Saskatoon office of SAB. In 2019, Saskatchewan UCC collections were consolidated in Regina.
Portée et contenu
Series consists of records relating to the administrative role of the Saskatchewan Conference office. Contents include: correspondence of the Secretary of Conference (1923-1924, 1928-1934), mostly Rev. A.W. Ingram; correspondence relating to the Cowan Estate (1949-1950); typed Records of Proceedings for the 1926 Conference; typed and mimeographed copies of reports presented at the annual conference (1934); and a file of documents relating to the Conference Cane, its history and symbolism.
