Administrative history
The United Church of Canada was formed in 1925, from a union of the Congregational Union of Canada, the Methodist Church and 70% of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, along with a number of churches organized under the General Council of Local Union Churches (mostly in Western Canada). Saskatchewan Conference was one of eleven regional Conferences established by the United Church of Canada General Council, at their inaugural meeting, in June 1925. Initially, the Conference contained 16 presbyteries but this number varied, in the years that followed.
In January 2019, as part of a larger restructuring of the United Church of Canada, Saskatchewan Conference and its seven existing presbyteries were combined into a single entity, initially identified as Region 4 and later renamed Living Skies Regional Council.
Custodial history
Most records in the fonds were transferred to the archives between 1925 and 1986. Their original provenance is unclear, though Conference administrative records may have come directly from office staff or committees. Some acquisitions were also noted in reports to Saskatchewan Conference annual meetings.
From 1925 through to 1982, the official repository for Conference, Presbytery and local records of the United Church in Saskatchewan was at St. Andrew’s College (Saskatoon), where they were managed by a designated Conference Archivist. In 1982, the Conference signed an agreement to house their records with the Saskatchewan Archives Board (later Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan), while still retaining ownership and management responsibilities. The collections were gradually relocated and continue to be stored with the Provincial Archives, to the present day.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of textual and other materials generated by the Conference, the Conference Executive, Conference Staff and Conference Committee members in the fulfillment of their mandate, as outlined in The Manual of the United Church of Canada, from 1925 to 2018. Some records created prior to Union (1925) are also included in certain series, as noted.
