História administrativa

The United Church of Canada was formed in 1925, from a union of the Congregational Union of Canada, the Methodist Church and 70% of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, along with a number of churches organized under the General Council of Local Union Churches (mostly in Western Canada). Saskatchewan Conference was one of eleven regional Conferences established by the United Church of Canada General Council, at their inaugural meeting, in June 1925. Initially, the Conference contained 16 presbyteries but this number varied, in the years that followed.

In January 2019, as part of a larger restructuring of the United Church of Canada, Saskatchewan Conference and its seven existing presbyteries were combined into a single entity, initially identified as Region 4 and later renamed Living Skies Regional Council.

História custodial

The provenance of this series is not clear but the records were likely transferred in the late-1980s and stored at the Saskatoon office of the Saskatchewan Archives Board (now Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan). In 2006, this group of Conference records was moved from the Saskatoon office, to a SAB storage space in Regina. Ownership and responsibility for the records remains with the UCC Living Skies Regional Council (formerly Saskatchewan Conference).

Âmbito e conteúdo

Series consists of a variety of records relating to the administrative role of the Saskatchewan Conference office, overseeing and supporting the work of presbyteries and local United Church congregations and missions in Saskatchewan. Records in this series appear to have been received in one group and reflect the range of activities administrative and field staff was involved in, especially from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Files primarily contain correspondence, reports, and related materials documenting: financial grants and loans made to support church congregations and their work; research and educational projects undertaken within the Church (and with external partners); meetings and decisions of various committees, task groups, boards and divisions; training and staff job descriptions; information and statistics from presbyteries; activities of the General Council; mission work among indigenous people on several Saskatchewan reserves; training and placement of student and lay ministers and missionaries; titles, grants and property information for various churches; newsletters and small scale publications from the Conference and its committees; youth outreach activities; and information about the operations of various incorporated ministries in Saskatchewan, including the Prairie Christian Training Centre (PCTC), Oliver Lodge, the United Church Housing Corporation of Regina, and several youth camps.

Fonte imediata de aquisição

Records were most likely transferred directly from the Conference office into the Conference Archives, around the late-1980s.

Organização

Files are arranged by subject, in keeping with what may have been the office filing system around the time the records were transferred. Contents do not appear to have been rearranged by archives staff. Records in this series were described, ca.1990, as part of the second group of Conference records (XXIII) added to the archival collections. In 2018, select groups of records were re-described as separate series (see Related Materials).
