During his five years with the Huskies wrestling team, Garvie won four Western Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Association conference titles and three Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union national championships. Garvie represented Canada at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and was also a member of the national team that toured extensively internationally. He went on to become coach of the Canadian national wrestling team, highlighted by leading the team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Garvie also played Huskies football for four years and was selected to the Western all-star team three times - 1966, 1967 and 1969. He was conference scoring champion in 1967 and was selected as the league's most valuable player. For four consecutive years - 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1970 - Garvie was awarded the E. Kent Phillips Trophy as male athlete of the year at the U of S. Garvie was inducted into both the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 1986. He later coached wrestling at Lakehead University and was head coach of the wrestling team and an assistant coach with the football team at the Uof S. The Dr. Gordon Garvie Prize in Physical Education honours Garvie, who died from ALS complications in 1988. Garvie Road in the Silverspring neighborhood honours him.
