Garvie represented Canada at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and was also a member of the national team that toured extensively internationally. He went on to become coach of the Canadian national wrestling team, highlighted by leading the team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Garvie also played Huskies football for four years and was selected to the Western all-star team three times - 1966, 1967 and 1969. He was conference scoring champion in 1967 and was selected as the league's most valuable player. For four consecutive years - 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1970 - Garvie was awarded the E.
