Head and shoulders image of Dr. Ed Safarian, Department of Economics and Political Science, 1956-1966.

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Albert Edward (Ed) Safarian was born in 1924 in Hamilton, Ontario. He received a BA in Political Economy and won the undergraduate gold medal at the University of Toronto, followed by a PhD in Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. Returning to Canada, Dr. Safarian first worked at the Dominion Bureau of Statistics (the forerunner of Statistics Canada) before moving to academia in 1956, teaching at the University of Saskatchewan until 1966. Dr. Safarian then joined the faculty of the University of Toronto, where he served as dean of the School of Graduate Studies from 1971-1976. Dr. Safarian received a host of honours, including his appointment as president of the Canadian Economics Association and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He was also named a member of the Order of Canada in 2005. Dr. Safarian died in 2016 in Toronto at age 91.
