Notice biographique
Emma Riis Whittome was born in 1920 on her family's farm located at SW 1/2 Sec. 24 Township 46 Range 18 W2nd. Her parents were Walter Christian Nygaard and Kristina Nygaard (Mark). Her middle name, Riis, was a family name pronounced "Reese". In 1940 Emma married Steven Whittome. The ceremony was held in the Melfort Anglican Church manse. Emma and Steven had two children, Deanna Muriel and Steve Murray. Emma worked off and on as a hired girl and she was a house wife. Emma was interested in collecting and preserving antiques and artifacts. Her interests in this area lead her to become a member of the original committee that worked to open the Melfort and District museum in 1971. She also sat on the museum's board and was a dedicated volunteer.
Historique de la conservation
Two of the photographs were transfered to Emma Whittome by John Fedde before being donated to the Melfort and District Museum with Emma Whittome's other photographs.
Portée et contenu
The fonds contains black and white photographs from Emma Whittome's private collection. They date from 1908 to the 1950's. Most of the photographs were taken in the town of Melfort and its surrounding area. The two photographs originally belonging to John Fedde were likely taken in the Melfort area, but this cannot be confirmed. Over half of the photographs are of buildings and streets in the town of Melfort including the Lady Minto Hospital, Broadway School, and local churches. Other subjects include the students and teachers from the Naisberry S.D. #788, Belgrave S.D #2587, Prescott S.D. #3953, and Melfort High School.
