Biographical history
William Joseph Maher was born on 10 March 1927 in Brooklyn, New York. After a brief stint with the US military, he studied biology at Purdue University, graduating with a BSc in 1951. He earned his MSc in Zoology from the University of Michigan, and in 1961, earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Maher joined the University of Saskatchewan in 1963. Upon his retirement in 1994 he was named Professor Emeritus. Maher specialized in vertebrate taxonomy and ornithology, and his research took him to the Canadian arctic; Antarctica; Australia; and throughout the Canadian prairies.
