Biographical history

Vernon Clifford Fowke, born on 5 May 1907 in the district of Parry Sound, Ontario, grew up in Melville, Saskatchewan and attended Regina College for his secondary education. He went on to the University of Saskatchewan where he earned both a B.A. (1928) and MA. (1929). In 1942 he was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. Dr. Fowke also studied at the Universities of Chicago and Toronto and the London School of Economics. He joined the faculty of the U of S as an Instructor in Economics in 1930 and became full Professor in 1948. Dr. Fowke spent 1957-1958 at the University of Toronto as the Harold Innis Visiting Research Professor and in 1962 was named Britnell Professor of Economics at the U of S. Dr. Fowke was a prolific writer, authoring three books and over seventy articles. He also served in various capacities on several royal commissions and government sponsored committees. In February of 1966, Dr. Fowke died suddenly while on sabbatical at Stanford, California.

This fonds contains correspondence, articles, speeches, radio broadcasts, notes, briefs, minutes, reports, and memoranda pertaining to the personal, academic and public interests and activities of V.C. Fowke. Topics include monetary policy, finance, taxation, banking, agricultural economy and policy, transportation and freight rates.
