Bio/historical note: Located south of the campus on Cumberland Avenue, The School For The Deaf opened in the fall of 1931. Built by the provincial Department of Education, it functioned as a residential school for students deemed too deaf to be accommodated in the public system. The U of S acquired the School from the province in the mid 1980s for a nominal fee. At the time of transfer, the building was renamed the R. J. D. Williams Building, honoring the school's long time chief supervisor.
