Geschiedenis

Saskatchewan's first infantry unit was established in 1907 as the 95th Saskatchewan Rifles. Subsequent reorganization resulted in the establishment of the 105th Regina Fusiliers (Saskatoon) in 1914. After World War I, the North Saskatchewan Regiment was formed, incorporating the 105th Fusiliers (Saskatoon) as 1st Battalion. In 1923, the 1st Battalion North Saskatchewan Regiment assumed the title of Saskatoon Light Infantry (SLI). In 1936, an extensive reorganization of the non-permanent active militia resulted in the infantry regiments (including the SLI) becoming machine gun regiments. The SLI had headquarters and three companies in Saskatoon, and one company ("C" Coy) in Melfort. During World War II, the SLI, which left for the United Kingdom in December 1939, became the Machine Gun (MG) battalion of the First Canadian Division. In May 1943, upon being reorganized as the 1st Canadian Division Support Battalion (SLI), the battalion landed in Italy, where it fought until the end of the Italian campaign. There was further reorganization in 1944, and the battalion was disbanded in 1945 upon its return to Saskatoon.
