Institutionele geschiedenis
The Saskatchewan AIDS Network (SAN) was a coalition of community-based organizations dedicated to responding to HIV/AIDS at the provincial level through the development and maintenance of community partnerships. At the time of its formation in 1994, the founders believed that an organization was needed to facilitate co-operation and communication on a province-wide basis to deal with the HIV/AIDS crisis.
SAN was designed as a province-wide coalition in order to ensure that the voices of rural communities would be included and that the independent efforts of member organizations would contribute to collective goals. SAN had numerous objectives including: to support other service organizations and communities in their efforts to advocate for social change; to make HIV/AIDS a higher health priority for the general public in Saskatchewan; to develop more effective relationships with all levels of government and with other health and social justice coalitions; to provide opportunities for members to network, share information, build skills, and develop partnerships with one another; and to act as a resource centre for its members by providing access to up-to-date information, hard-to-find documents, and other HIV/AIDS-related resources.
The Board of Directors of SAN consisted of one representative from each member group of SAN. The SAN Steering Committee was responsible for the day to day operations of the coalition, for tasks on a provincial level (such as lobbying Ministers or building coalitions with other provincial groups), and for developing resource materials that would be helpful for member organizations. SAN membership was open to any Saskatchewan non-governmental organization that was dedicated to addressing HIV/AIDS in its organizational mandate. By the early 2000s, SAN was having difficulty meeting its mandate so it was dissolved in February 2003.
Geschiedenis beheer
Bereik en inhoud
This fonds consists of materials used, created, and accumulated by the Saskatchewan AIDS Network. The records primarily detail SAN’s interactions with local, provincial, national, and international HIV/AIDS groups. These records include membership information, correspondence, and workshop/conference materials (i.e. agendas, programs, presentations) created by organizations of which SAN was a member. There is some material pertaining to SAN’s operations in this fonds but most of the operational records are related to SAN’s program-delivery (i.e. organizing conventions, workshops, or training). There are few records relating to the administration and internal operation of SAN in this fonds. A large portion of the fonds is HIV/AIDS resource materials that have been gathered by SAN. This includes pamphlets, publications, articles, newsletters, and information sheets from a variety of non-profit organizations and government ministries.

Ordening
When the material was received, it was organized by the donor into two sections: labelled file folders and loose publications. No original order could be discerned in the materials. The material has been arranged into the following series for ease of access:
I. Saskatchewan AIDS Network Files
II. Informational and Resource Files
III. Publications, Pamphlets, Articles, and Films
The records which arrived in labelled folders were arranged into series I and series II. Series I consists of both SAN’s own operational records and materials which detail interactions between SAN and other organizations. Series II consists of informational and resource materials which were gathered by SAN and organized into labelled folders.
Series III consists of the loose publications. This series has been divided into two sub-series. Sub-series A consists of publications or materials created by SAN. Sub-series B consists of materials created by other organizations.
File titles for series I and series II were provided by records creator. Information appearing in square brackets was added by the archivist. As the files and publications appeared to be in no particular order, they have been arranged alphabetically.
Researchers should note that there is some crossover between the series of records. Particularly, that informational resources (such as publications and pamphlets) can be found within all three series.
Duplicate copies of publications were discarded. Publications which were already available in Special Collections were not retained but they are listed in the finding aid with a note indicating the call number for Special Collections.
