Bio/Historical Note: George T. Smith, C.S.B. was born in Toronto. He was educated in Ireland and Canada, and holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from McGill University, the University of St. Michael’s College and the University of Toronto. He served as president of St. Joseph’s College at the University of Alberta from 1992 to 1997, and as president of St. Thomas More College at the University of Saskatchewan from 2000 to 2010. From 2003 to 2005, he held the position of chair of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities of Canada. In 2010 he was elected to the position of Superior General of the Basilian Fathers, and was re-elected for a second four-year term in 2014. In 2012, he was the founding chair of the Board of Directors of Presentation Manor for Seniors in Toronto, a 230-unit eldercare residence for religious women and men and Catholic lay people. Since 1993, Fr. Smith has served on the governing boards of eight universities and colleges in North America. He received the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Award in 2005, bestowed on Canadians “who have made outstanding and exemplary contributions to their communities or to Canada as a whole.” Fr. Smith is serving as Interim Dean of the Faculty of Theology of Saint Paul University in Ottawa (2021).
