Biografie
Richard Lawrence Sweet was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on 24 December 1949 but at a young age moved with his family to Saskatchewan. He completed his high school in Prince Albert and convocated from the University of Saskatchewan. He worked for the Saskatchewan Assessment Management Agency (SAMA) for over thirty years, based first in Regina but since 1977, in Saskatoon. His work with SAMA gave him an opportunity to travel extensively throughout the province. He was involved with numerous organizations, including the Saskatchewan Government Employees Union (SGEU); but his avocation was the history of brewing. He was a member of several brewerianist clubs, including the Big Chief Brewerianist Chapter, for which he served as treasurer and, most extensively, editor of the newsletter. His research lead to the publication of numerous articles on the history of beers and brewing, as well as extensive directories on Canadian breweries. He died from cancer on 2 September 2009.

This fonds contains materials primarily related to Richard Sweet’s interest and research into the history of brewing. There are extensive materials relating to Canadian and western US breweries; beer companies; and beer-related materials, including magazines, newsletters, other published reference material, and collectibles (predominantly, posters, labels and mats). It includes Richard Sweet’s extensive notes, and his research materials leading to his publications, The Directory of Canadian Breweries (first and second editions); Malted Manitoba; and Brewed Right on the Prairies: 122 Years of Brewing in Saskatchewan.

Ordening
Materials were kept by Richard Sweet in a series of binders and file folders, roughly, but not exclusively, relating to the specific series identified below. Thus while ‘brewery histories’ were most often found in binders, researchers should be aware that considerable relevant materials could also be found within the file folders, here identified as the “subject /nominal files” series. Similarly, brewery advertising, specifically copies of ads from newspapers, can be found both in series 4.1 and within series 7.
The file titles created by Richard Sweet in series 7 suggest materials compiled or created over time: similar, but not identical, file titles were often used for very similar materials. In some instances these have been grouped together by the archivist (identified by use of square brackets) or by “see also” notes, but researchers interested in specific topics should review the full listing within this series.
Organized into 8 series:
- Associations
- Brewery Directories
- Brewery History
- Brewery Ephemera
