Justice Thomas Berger, honourary Doctor of Laws degree recipient, awaits presentation at Convocation held at Centennial Auditorium.
Bio/Historical Note: Thomas Rodney Berger (born 1933) is a Canadian politician and jurist of Swedish descent. Berger was the leader of the British Columbia New Democratic Party for most of 1969, prior to Dave Barrett. Justice Berger is best known for his work as the Royal Commissioner of the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry which released its findings in 1977. In 1983 Justice Berger resigned from the Bench, in order that he might be free again to involve himself directly in the fields of native and human rights. In 1989 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. He is a member of the Order of British Columbia. Starting in 2006 Berger sat on the advisory council of the Order of Canada, which researches the merits of future members of the Order and advises the Governor General of Canada on new appointments. He is an honourary member of the Royal Military College of Canada. In 2012 Justice Berger was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
