Emmett M. Hall, University Chancellor, making presentation of an honourary Doctor of Laws degree to Gordon South at 70th spring Convocation held in Centennial Auditorium.

Bio/Historical Note: Gordon South was born in 1912 near Stratford-on-Avon, England. He received his schooling in England, coming to Canada in 1928 when his parents settled on a farm near Silver Park, Saskatchewan. In 1937 he began farming on his own near Whittome. He began his career of active involvement when he was elected to the Whittome Wheat Pool Committee in 1938. South served as Pool delegate from 1947-1952 and as director from 1965-1972. He was a charter member of the Melfort Credit Union and went on to become director of Saskatchewan Co-operative Credit Society from 1963-1968, and was president from 1966-1968. He was a director of Co-operative Trust Company and its president from 1966-1969. From 1968-1973 he was a council member of Co-operative Insurance Services. A leading predigreed seed grower, South served as director, Saskatchewan branch, Canadian Seed Growers Association from 1948-1958 and was president 1955-57. South was a school trustee and a 4-H Leader. He was president of the Saskatchewan Field Husbandry Association 1951-55 and in 1959 was named honorary life member. He was appointed to the agricultural advisory committee of the Saskatchewan Universities Commission. He served on a number of provincial advisory boards and commissions and as director of Saskatchewan Computer Corporation and Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. South was made an honorary life member of the Agricultural Institute of Canada in 1977 and in 1978 he received the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal. In 1980 South was made a member of the Order of Canada and in 1981 he received an honorary doctor of laws degree at the University of Saskatchewan. South died in 2006 at age 94.
