Bio/Historical Note: Archbishop Henri Légaré, OMI, was born in 1918 at Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan. He was the son of Amanda Douville and Philippe Legare. After his studies at Gravelbourg College (Saskatchewan) he entered the noviciate of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate at Saint Laurent (Manitoba), in 1937. From 1938 to 1944 Légaré studied philosophy and theology at the Scholasticate of Lebret. He was ordained to the priesthood at Lebret in 1943. In 1944 he began specialized studies in social sciences, first at Laval University where he obtained his Master's degree in 1947 and then at the University of Lille in France (1948-1950) where he presented his doctoral thesis. Légaré taught at Saint Norbert Seminary (Manitoba) and was director of the Catholic Health Association of Canada from 1952-1957. At the University of Ottawa he served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (1954-1958) and as Rector (1958-1964). After spending three years in Manitoba Légaré was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Labrador-Shefferville in 1967. He served as Archbishop of Grouard-McLennan (Alberta) for 24 years, from 1972 until his retirement in 1996. Legare died in Ottawa in 2004 at age 86.
