Dr. Sylvia Fedoruk, University Chancellor, making presentation of an honourary Doctor of Laws degree to Fred Gathercole at spring Convocation held at Centennial Auditorium.
Bio/Historical Note: Frederick J, Gathercole was born in 1908 at Broadview, Saskatchewan, and attended elementary and secondary schooling there. He attended Regina Normal School and then pursued a career in education until retirement in 1973. Gathercole obtained a BA in Economics and Mathematics from Queens' University, BEd and MEd degrees from the University of Manitoba, and a PhD in Education from the University of Toronto. He conducted further post-graduate studies in education at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Gathercole began his career as a teacher of Grades 1-10 in a multi-graded rural school; served as principal of a two-room hamlet school, and as vice-principal and principal in Regina city elementary schools; acted as an instructor in the Regina and Saskatoon Teachers' Colleges, and as visiting instructor at the University of Saskatchewan. He ended his professional career as Director of Education for the Saskatoon Public Schools. Gathercole was named the Saskatchewan School Administrator of the Year by the Saskatchewan Council on Educational Administration, and the Saskatoon Public Board of Education named its offices the Dr. F.J. Gathercole Education Centre (now River Landing). He was recognized as Saskatoon’s Citizen of the Year in 1973. He also retired from education that same year. In recognition of his lifetime of service to education, Gathercole was awarded the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 1985. Gathercole died in Saskatoon in 1993.
