Administrative history

A civilian flying club aerodrome 7.4 km south of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, became a federal installation just after the outbreak of World War II and was called the RCAF Station Moose Jaw. A new aerodrome was completed in 1941 and the station was the site of the British Commonwealth Air Training Program (BCATP) which used Harvard and Oxford aircraft to train pilots from Commonwealth and other countries. RCAF Moose Jaw was de-commissioned in 1946 and returned to civilian use.

Custodial history

This collection of photos was taken by a pilot stationed at the air base near Moose Jaw, and were purchased by the University of Saskatchewan Archives and Special Collections in 2013.

Scope and content

This small collection consists primarily of photographs depicting life on the base as well as travels to other destinations in Canada, including Banff, Alberta, and Regina SK. A felt “Moose Jaw Millers” badge is also included.

Arrangement

Stored in an album prior to acquisition, these photos were received sans album, and without original order. They have been roughly ordered by size, and by subject content, with those images of the base itself being listed first, and ventures off-base being given later numbers.
