Bio/Historical Note: Michael Shaw was born in 1924 in Barbados and graduated from The Lodge School, a co-educational government secondary school in Saint John, Barbados, established in 1745. In 1943 Shaw came to Canada on a scholarship to attend McGill University, where he obtained a PhD in biology. Following a year of postdoctoral work at Cambridge, Michael joined the University of Saskatchewan as its first plant pathologist. Shaw was involved with teaching, research on wheat rust, and administrative duties. In 1967 Shaw became Dean of Agricultural Sciences at the University of British Columbia. He remained at UBC for 22 years as Dean, Academic Vice-President and University Professor. He retired in 1989. Shaw died in 2013.
