Lung Saskatchewan

This archive encompasses lung health history in Saskatchewan, interweaving events at a national, provincial, and community level. In this archive, you will find information on historic advances in lung health, our organizational history, as well as the history of the Saskatchewan Anti-Tuberculosis League and its relationship with Indigenous Peoples.

We recognize that though the legacy of the Saskatchewan Anti-Tuberculosis League was the near eradication of tuberculosis in Saskatchewan, sanatorium treatment was long, and for many individuals was an isolating and vulnerable experience as they suffered with an often-stigmatized disease far from home. To respectfully tell the many stories of the sanatorium system and to answer Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Justice 67-70, Lung Saskatchewan has partnered with the Office of the Treaty Commissioner to seek the guidance of an Elders' Council to move forward together in a good way (culturally safe and responsive). We recognize that reconciliation begins with truth, and as such have committed to making the extensive archives our predecessors have collected accessible to families, communities, and researchers seeking information on the sanatorium system and other events our predecessors witnessed and documented.

Sanatorium experiences were often linked to the residential school system, if the histories shared on this website bring up uncomfortable memories and emotions, know that you are not alone, and there are resources you can access for support: The National Indian Residential School Crisis Line provides 24-hour crisis support to former Indian Residential School students and their families toll-free at 1-866-925-4419. First Nations, Inuit, and Métis seeking immediate emotional support can also contact the Hope for Wellness Help Line toll-free at 1-855-242-3310, or by online chat at https://www.hopeforwellness.ca/.

History

For more than 110 years, we have been at the forefront of improving lung health in Saskatchewan. Through the years, our commitment to continuous improvement has fueled our passion to advance our work in order to serve you better.

We are happy to introduce our new look and logo as part of the ongoing evolution of our brand. Lung Saskatchewan has chosen a logo and colours that deeply reflect what we represent, the work that we do, and symbolizes our future.

This new logo is shown as a circle with lungs from which bronchial tubes or roots, grow into a tree. The circle represents the interdependence of not only the lungs within the body, but also the interdependence of all that we do in research, education, care, and advocacy within the communities we serve in Saskatchewan, and across Canada.

The lungs represent our reason for being, that with which we breathe, draw energy and sustain life. The bronchial tubes or roots growing from the lungs represent our growth and evolution in all we do. Last but not least, the tree represents the strength of our foundation, our ability to weather challenges, and our connection to the earth.

With a new look and revised name, comes new opportunities to strengthen our work to steadily improve lung health, one breath at a time.
