Biografie

Lorne Smith was born in 1933. After becoming an elementary school teacher he moved to the Northwest Territories, teaching in the following communities:Arctic Bay 1962 – 1966, Cape Dorset 1967 – 1968, and Pond Inlet 1968 – 1969. In 1974 he moved to Yellowknife to work as an Education officer with the Department of Education, Government of the Northwest Territories. In 1992, Lorne Smith left his post with the Government of the NWT and moved to British Columbia.

Geschiedenis beheer

These photographs were donated to the Pond Inlet Library in 1994 having been prepared and copied by Mr. Smith at his own Baffin Photo business in British Columbia. The photographs were subsequently transferred to the Pond Inlet Archives on its establishment in 2005.

Bereik en inhoud

The fonds consists of 175 black and white photographs taken by Lorne Smith during his period of employment in Pond Inlet as a teacher with the Government of the NWT (now Nunavut). Documented are scenes of community life, school activities in the classrooms and outside, Christmas events and spring games. Of particular interest are the photographs of visit of Governor General Roland Michener to Pond Inlet, portraits of elders, Boy Scouts and Girl Guide groups.
