Scope and content
Kilauea Iki Volcano, Hawaii, 5 Dec. 1959. The vent is about 3/4 miles away from the camera. The lava lake which is one mile long is about 300 ft. below. Violent fountaining of lava apparent as the liquid is hurled into the air, giving a reddish glow to the surrounding area. Wave action is shown on the lake by the lines in the foreground which represent glowing lava showing the breaks in the lava crust. Photo courtesy of E.J. Britten; published in Science (?), Jan. 1960.
