The Indian Head Armoury at 708 Otterloo Street (then Market Street) was built in 1913 and formally opened on February 18, 1914 with Colonel Sam Steele as the guest of honour. Sam Steele was a famous member of the Northwest Mounted Police (now the RCMP) and then led a prairie contingent to fight in the Boer War in South Africa. The local military unit in Indian Head was the Troop "C" Squadron of the 16th Light Horse (see 2011 Heritage Tour booklet of Indian Head's historic buildings - p 42)
