Head and shoulders image of Hazel B. Keeler, Professor of Nursing.
Bio/Historical Note: Hazel Bernice Keeler (c. 1910-1971) was born in Lang, Saskatchewan. Keeler received her basic nursing at Vancouver General Hospital and obtained her bachelor’s degree at the University of Saskatchewan. After earning a master’s degree from Columbia University, she went on to become director of the School of Nursing at the University of Saskatchewan for nearly 20 years, from 1950 to 1969. Keeler was part of a steering committee to coordinate and plan the centralized teaching program for schools of nursing. This plan was implemented in 1953. She also inaugurated a three-year diploma course in Saskatchewan in 1954, and participated on the educational policy committee that set curriculum and standards for students. She was second vice-president of the Canadian Nurses Association from 1960 to 1962 and chair of the Canadian Nurses Association Committee on Nursing Education. The Hazel B. Keeler Memorial Scholarship is open to students entering their third or fourth/final year pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Selection is based on academic achievement and participation in college and campus activities.
