Historique

Cedric Gillott was born in 1940. The native of Sheffield, England, earned a B.SC (1962), Ph.D. (1965) and D.Sc. (1990) all from the Department of Zoology, University of Nottingham. He joined the University Of Saskatchewan Department Of Biology in 1965 and was named a Full Professor in 1975. Dr. Gillott took early retirement in 1999 and was named Emeritus Professor of Biology. His publishing record is impressive with over 100 scientific papers and reviews, along with magazine articles on insects and gardening. His undergraduate text book, Entomology, was first published in 1980, with a third edition coming in 2005. Gillott’s primary academic focus has been the study of insects, in particular their physiology and management using biologically sustainable methods. He taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses including General Biology, The Living Earth, Animal Structure and Function, Cell Physiology, General Entomology, Comparative Endocrinology, Insect Structure and Function, Perspectives in Biology, Advanced Insect Physiology, Principles and Applications of Electron Microscopy and Special Topics in Biology. He has also successfully supervised 20 Ph.D. and M.Sc. graduate students. Dr. Gillott was active in the university community serving on several college and departmental committees. A student athlete in England, Gillott coached the University of Saskatchewan soccer team for eight seasons between 1968 and 1978 and was responsible for Canada West soccer going from a weekend tournament to regular league play. In 2011, he was inducted into Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame in the builder category. Throughout his career, he has been an active member of several national and international entomological and biological organizations. His many honours include the Gold Medal, Entomological Society of Canada, 2007 and the Honorary Member, Entomological Society of Canada, 2016. He is probably best known in the wider community for his on-air presence on CBC Saskatchewan radio’s Good Question of the Day. He has published serval non-academic articles and pamphlets including his 2009 Insects in Your Yard and Garden an independent study course manual prepared for Centre for Continuing and Distance Education, University of Saskatchewan Master Gardener.
