Bio/Historical Note: Dr. William Earle DeCoteau received his BA (1960) and MD (1964).from the University of Saskatchewan. He was very involved with St. Thomas More College and with STM’s Newman Club as well. Dr. DeCoteau returned to the U of S as a faculty member in the Department of Medicine in 1972 and by 1980 became full professor. He was head of the Immunology and Rheumatology program from 1974 to 1988. In 1988 Dr. DeCoteau took a study leave to pursue the field of Geriatrics at McMaster University. From 1989 to 2004 he was head of the section for Geriatrics in the College of Medicine. Dr. DeCoteau has remained active in the Geriatric Program at City Hospital and also runs a dementia clinic at Providence Place in Moose Jaw, where he serves as Medical Director. A strong advocate for the many sufferers of dementia, Dr. DeCoteau is still active in research, focusing on the often under-diagnosed vascular disease of the brain (2021). Reflecting his concern and commitment to the future, as president of the College of Medicine Alumni Association, Dr. DeCoteau was involved with the establishment of the Medical Student Bursary program while at STM; he established a student bursary in memory of his late wife, Anne Phelan Decoteau (1938-1992).
