Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Jawahar (Jay) Kalra was born in Aligarh, India. He began his post-secondary studies at the Aligarh Muslim University, earning a BSc in Chemistry and Biology in 1967, followed by his MSc in Biochemistry in 1969. He joined All India Institute of Medical Sciences as a junior research fellow in Biochemistry in 1969. Dr. Kalra continued his studies at Memorial University in Newfoundland, earning an MSc (1972), a PhD (1976), and an MD (1981). He did residency training at the University of Ottawa and was senior resident in the departments of Medicine and Laboratory Medicine at Ottawa Civic and Ottawa General hospitals. Dr. Kalra is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, an Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, UK and a Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE). In 1985 Dr. Kalra accepted a position with the Department of Pathology at the University of Saskatchewan and Royal University Hospital. He served as head of the Department of Pathology (1991-2000) and head of the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Saskatoon District Health (1994-2000). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC), the Canadian Academy of Health Science (FCAHS), and an Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, UK. In addition, Dr. Kalra has been an active member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Equity Issues Advisory Committee and has served on the Task Force on Equity Issues, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He has served on several committees of the College of Medicine and University of Saskatchewan including as Chair of the 90th Saskatchewan Anniversary Conference Planning Committee (1995-1996) and has been an elected member of the University Council (1999-2001). Dr. Kalra has also served as a member of the Medical Advisory Committee (1994-2000), as a member of the executive of the Medical Advisory Committee (199419-96) of Saskatoon District Health Board along with several other committees including member of the Clinical Review Panel (1992-1994) and has served as a member of the Legislative Committee of the Saskatchewan Medical Association (1995-2000). Dr. Kalra was named the Saskatoon Citizen of the Year in 2015. Kalra Street in the Brighton neighborhood of Saskatoon honours him (2021).
