Scope and content

Head and shoulders image of Dr. Dorothy M. Middleton, Western College of Veterinary Medicine.

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Dorothy Middleton’s fascination with veterinary pathology began during her fourth year at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh. She had intended to be a large animal practitioner because of her agricultural roots: her father had a farm in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. But after receiving her Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery in 1968, Dr. Middleton stayed on in Edinburgh to study streptococcus sinus infection in pigs’ tonsils and complete a PhD in pathology in 1972. Her next move was to Switzerland where she was an instructor in veterinary pathology at the University of Zurich for two years. Dr. Middleton was appointed assistant professor at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) (1975) and associate professor in WCVM’s Department of Veterinary Pathology (1981). She also served a three-year appointment as head of WCVM’s Department of Veterinary Pathology from 2002-2005. In 2003 Dr. Middleton became chair of the committee responsible for planning the college’s diagnostic addition and renovations. After her retirement in 2008, Dr. Middleton continued to be involved in the project that initially focused on completing the College’s new two-storey diagnostics addition. Renovations to the WCVM’s existing diagnostics area — part of the original plan that Dr. Middleton helped to develop — were initially on hold for more than a year. But that changed in June 2009 when the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan announced $9.06 million to include completion of the state-of-the-art diagnostics complex at the College. Dr. Middleton retired in 2008 and is Professor Emerita, Department of Veterinary Pathology (2022).
