Scope and content
Saskatoon sculptor Doug Bentham (centre) guides his massive welded-steel artwork, called "Pas Muraille - The Gate", into place onto a newly poured cement pad facing Campus Drive between the Animal Science barns and the Griffiths Stadium intersection at College Drive. The artist is helped by Cliff Rempel (left), a construction engineer with the University's Facilities Management Division, and by crane operator Shane McLeod (right). Bentham donated the white-painted sculpture to the growing U of S art collection, saying the piece has been appraised at at value of $50,000. He created "The Gate" in 1987 and it was displayed that year at Saskatoon City Hall. He said he has wanted to place a sculpture on the campus grounds for some time - and "The Gate" is an appropriate one, since both it an the university symbolize passage into another level, or stage of life.
