Histoire administrative
The Avenue Community Centre for Gender & Sexual Diversity was originally incorporated in 1991 as Gay & Lesbian Health Services, a non-profit agency in Saskatoon working to address health and social issues in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit and queer (LGBT2Q) community. In 2005 it became The Avenue Community Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, and in 2015 its name changed again to OUTSaskatoon.
Historique de la conservation
The papers and publications in the first series of this collection were given to Neil Richards when they closed/transformed into OUTSaskatoon. Neil had been intended on passing the materials onto the University of Saskatchewan Archives when he passed away in 2018. The materials were mixed into his personal archives and separated out by the archivist who processed Neil’s fonds.
The posters were left with the Avenue Community Centre by an anonymous donor in March 2015. The Avenue Community Centre donated these materials to the University Archives and Special Collections shortly thereafter.
Portée et contenu
The textual series contains mainly publications that were owned by the Avenue Community Centre which focus on LGBTQ issues and health. The poster series contains a variety of feminist and lesbian themed posters from the 1970’s –through the 1980’s, many of which are from Saskatchewan and Saskatoon in particular, although other locations are included.
