Long shore drift

Long shore drift. Wave crests advancing at an angle on a straight shoreline and across a bottom that shallows at a uniform rate are bent shoreward, as suggested in this diagram. The refraction is caused by the increasing interference of the bottom with the orbits of water-particle motion within the wave. Leet and Judson, 1958, p. 309.
