Looking from Observatory on Sulphur Mountain north and east towards Banff Springs Hotel, which is on Triassic Spray River formation. The strata dip toward the viewer. Underneath the Spray River are in sequence the Mississippian-Pennsylvanian-Permian (?) Upper Rundle and Rocky Mountain formations the Mississippian Rundle formation (Tunnel Mountain is composed of this) and in front of Tunnel Mountain the Mississippian Banff, the Devonian Exshaw, Palliser and Fairholme which is thrust over the Cretaceous Kootenay with the contact just this side of the Cascade River of which the valley walls can be seen in the distance beyond those of the Bow River which is in the middle of the photo.
