Ellesmere Gr. Looking north to show dark Permian beds

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north from Station 63 K 48 across valley to show dark Permian beds at left dip to northwest and in fault contact with grey and red Triassic Bjorne beds to the right which dip to the east at 7 degrees near the fault and increase to 60 degrees farther away. The fault is possibly normal and dips to the east (?).

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north to show left dark hill of Permian rocks

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north from station 63 K 46 to show left dark hill of Permian rocks against which are faulted light grey sandstones of the Triassic Bjorne formation. The fault possibly dips eastward and may be a normal rather than a reverse fault as shgown on the photo-geologic mosaic.

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north to show local folding in Eureka Sound beds

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north from station 63 K 83 to show local folding in Eureka Sound beds in detail and westward dipping greyish-green Permian Assistance beds at skyline and reddish Pennsylvanian Canyon Fiord below the Assistance om thrust contact over the Eureka Sound; notch in skyline is approximate position of thrust fault which dips eastward at about 40 degrees.

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north to show local folding in Tertiary Eureka Sound beds

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north from entrance to canyon upstream from station 63 K 83 to show local folding in Tertiary Eureka Sound beds directly beneath an eastward dipping thrust along which Permian Assistance beds (greyish-green) and Pennsylvanian Canyon Fiord beds (reddish) were thrust over the Eureka Sound. The thrust fault is just above the white knoll at the skyline and can be followed from there to the right at the base of the distinctively red beds below the dark area.

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north to show Permian Assistance beds and Pennsylvanian Canyon Fiord

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north from entrance to canyon upstream from station 63 K 83. Photo immediately to the rifhr (east) of slide 60. The thrust fault with greenish-grey Permian Assistance beds and reddish Pennsylvanian Canyon strata over Tertiary Eureka Sound beds which are locally folded, can be followed from just above the light knoll at the skyline to the right along the base of the distinctively red beds. The Eureka Sound beds below are partly covered by red talus from the canyon Fiord above but in places the dark carbonaceous layers in the Eureka Sound can be seen through the cover.

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north to show shales

Ellesmere Gr. Part of section 63 K 73. At base of partial section shown here is shale with abundant fusulinids, corals, brachipods, bryozoans. Above th shale is hard ledge-forming calcerous siltstone causing waterfall. The shale hard siltstone contact is at 100 foot level of measured field section. Above the hard siltstone if another softer shale and above this greyish-white gypsum. Dennis Maier in picture.

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north toward Tertiary, Eureka Sound

Ellesmere Gr. Looking north from 63 K 61. Picture is immediately to the right (east) of slide 43 and overlaps. Bedded grey rocks in middle foreground are Tertiary, Eureka Sound. In far background bedded gypsum can be seem and behind it Canyon Fiord.
