Cross-bedding, orientation. Map showing the outcropping band of Caseyville conglomerate (Perm.) in southern Illinois and observations on the orientation of cross-bedding. Arrows show the mean direction of cross-bedding sampled in six mile wide areas, and the circle limits indicates the statistical limits of 90 per cent confidence in these means. These measurements show that the mean direction of currents from which the sand was deposited in this whole region was approximately southwest, suggesting a northwestern source for the sediments.
