Turel, Franzika L.M., 1924- (Professor of Biology)

Franzika L.M. Turel was born in Berlin on 10 January 1924. Although her father, active in left wing politics, fled Germany in 1933, Turel and her mother remained in Berlin until she finished high school in 1942. By the end of that year they moved to Zurich. Turel enrolled at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and earned a PhD in 1952. She was awarded a National Research Council (NRC) postdoctoral fellowship at the Prairie Regional Laboratory in Saskatoon, and began research into the physiology of plant rusts. Turel is best known for her work developing techniques for growing rust fungi independent of a host. Turel joined the faculty of the Department of Biology at the University of Saskatchewan in 1961. Initially a laboratory supervisor, Turel was promoted to Associate Professor. She retired in 1991.

Tuktu and Nogak project

The Tuktu and Nogak (caribou and calves) project was conducted in Kitikmeot region, Nunavut, to document the traditional Inuit knowledge (Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit) of the caribou of Bathurst Inlet, Nunavut. The project was conducted with elders from various communities in Kitikmeot.

Tugaske Pastoral Charge was formed as a new United Church charge in 1925, part of Moose Jaw Presbytery and containing just the Tugaske preaching point.

Between 1946 and 1951, Tugaske and Eybrow Pastoral Charges amalgamated to form Tugaske-Eyebrow Pastoral Charge, with appointments at Bridgeford, Brownlee, Eskbank, Eyebrow, and Tugaske. Lake Valley was added around 1965 and Keeler around 1982. Brownlee amalgamated with Keeler in 1986 and eventually closed, on June 30, 1996.

The charge amalgamated with Central Butte Pastoral Charge, on July 1, 2007, forming the new Spirit Hills Pastoral Charge.
